We know it will take a while, but the 2022 Dodge Challenger is the next big thing. According to the latest reports, Dodge has a plan to rival the Ford Mustang Hybrid model. Challenger is an old school model in every possible way. Thanks to its high-performance Hellcat and Demon versions, Challenger is still a popular vehicle.
However, it seems like the Mustang takes all the credits. Now, the 2022 Challenger will undergo severe changes in order to battle Mustang and Chevy Camaro. Besides the redesign, Challenger will introduce numerous mechanical upgrades and much more.
2022 Challenger – Electrification
Chrysler was silent on the speculations about the electric powertrain. However, FCA confirmed that Dodge is considering the electrification, earlier this year. But that doesn’t mean the 2022 Dodge Challenger will be all-electric. Whatsoever, the hybrid drivetrain is the most possible outcome. If this really happens, Challenger will go through a serious revamp.
For a start, a new platform that can accommodate hybrid powertrain is a must. On top of that, Dodge is reportedly working on a hybrid powertrain for its high-performance division. However, it is hard to imagine supercharged V8 being out of production.
Gasoline Models are Slowly Dying
It is a sad reality for those who are into conventional engines. Gasoline powertrains will become the past in the very near future. The question is: Does this affect the 2022 Dodge Challenger? The answer is no. Unlike the Camaro or Mustang models, Challenger does not offer a four-cylinder engine. Whatsoever, the base model is available with a familiar 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar unit. This output is rated at 305 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. Optional 5.7-liter V8 is good for 375 horses and 410 lb-ft of twists.
Upper trim levels are offering a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that can deliver 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. Finally, an iconic supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 generates astonishing 707 hp. The Demon variant comes with the same engine, and it offers 840 horses. Still, the Demon is not a street-legal car. Some things will change in 2022, and some of these engine options won’t be in the offer — sad reality.
What Do We Know About Next-Gen 2022 Challenger?
First of all, the aging Daimler-Benz architecture will be gone. The 2022 Dodge Challenger will ride on a lighter platform. Although we don’t know how the new Challenger will look like, the weight will be reduced for sure. When compared to the competition, Challenger’s weight is unacceptable. To compare, Mustang is 3,800 pounds heavy and Challenger almost 4,500. Dodge plans to make its iconic sedan competitive in every possible category. For that reason, the interior will also undergo a couple of drastic changes.
Besides the new cabin design, the 2022 Challenger will be packed with technology. As for the design, upper trim levels will wear expensive carbon fiber materials. The base model will come with a cheaper carbon-reinforced plastic variant. As for the hybrid model, Dodge will most likely deploy a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Furthermore, this turbocharged engine will be paired with the 48-volt eTorque system.
