Current Wrangler

The fourth-gen Wrangler, known as the “JL” was introduced two years ago. This model brought so many refreshments that are still present. That includes numerous exterior refinements, modern tech, and upgraded powertrain options.

Speaking of which, today’s Wrangler is using a 3.6-liter engine. This unit is good for 285 horsepower and it offers a both manual and automatic transmission. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler PHEV will offer better efficiency and it will cost more, logically.

2021 Jeep Wrangler PHEV – Specs

The upcoming 2021 Jeep Wrangler PHEV will excite many fans. This specific version will deploy a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. The same output is used by the 2019 Ram 1500. In a pickup truck variant, this engine delivers 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. However, those figures will surely change in Wrangler. A plug-in hybrid version will use the same in-house, two-motor hybrid system as in the Chrysler Pacifica.

A lithium-ion battery will surely be in the offer. However, we don’t know where will the battery pack sit. electric motors will be paired with the Atkinson cycle version of the Jeep’s 3.6-liter V6. So, we’ll have two different plug-in hybrid outputs. No matter which option you choose, Wrangler is about to get a plug for a charge.

Rivaling Ford Bronco

Ford Bronco is here for a reason, to take the crown of the best off-road SUV in the market. Knowing that the 2021 Jeep Wrangler PHEV will surely get further changes. For the start, Wrangler is using both the 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic gearbox. Upcoming Bronco will have a 10-speed automatic transmission. In our opinion, a 10-speed automatic is totally necessary.

Jeep could take advantage and offer a new 8-speed automatic that will act much better. Many fans hope for the 6-speed manual gearbox to remain an option. Ford Bronco will get a hybrid variant as well, along with the two-door model. Even the pickup truck is a rumor, but Jeep already answered with the Wrangler-based Gladiator pickup.

Spy Shots – Further Changes

For the start, the hybrid version will look exactly the same as the regular Wrangler. The only noticeable change is the black body cladding, at least according to spy shots. On the same photos, we can see the European version with clear center sections between the taillights. FCA confirmed that all electrification technology will sit in a protected area between exhaust and driveshaft space. An iconic seven-slot grille is intact, along with the round headlights.

Taillights are squared-off like always before. The most recognizable exterior features will remain and we like that, a lot. New 2021 Jeep Wrangler PHEV will lose some weight which should provide better fuel efficiency. From the inside, we could expect more driver-assistance features and safety aids. Mechanically, new Wrangler could get new brakes and advanced suspension setups.
