The all-new 2020 Ram 5500 is currently undergoing some road testing. If you look closely at the spy shots, you will see plenty of upgrades and changes. It appears to be a Cummins engine under the hood. However, we don’t expect any type of changes under the hood. The heavy-duty pickup truck comes with upscale design and the latest changes are more than visible.
After taking a closer look inside the cabin, we realized this is a Limited model. This specific trim level comes with plenty of premium amenities. Interior looks more luxury than the base model. New Ram 5500 will go on sale later in 2019.
2020 Ram 5500 Upgrades and Changes
The upcoming 2020 Ram 5500 comes with numerous upgrades. Even under the camouflage, some changes are easy to spot. The front grille now sports new inserts. Styling is the same as on the Ram 1500 light-duty model. On the other hand, unlike the Ram 1500 model, Ram 5500 looks hardcore. New LED headlights are visible too.
However, those headlamps are completely different than the headlamps on the 1500 pickup. LED signature lights are In the middle of the housing and turn signals are moved down below. As this is a Limited model, the vehicle’s profile looks slimmer and more upscale. However, we expect the same types of upgrades on the base trim level as well.
Surprisingly, we managed to take a closer look inside the cabin. Spy shots are showing a stylish interior design. We quickly realized that this is a Limited model on the spy photos. Design and amenities are looking way too luxurious for the base model. However, both trims will get the same types of upgrades. Ram’s goal is to mimic the interior of the new Ram 1500 model.
Interior of the 2020 Ram 5500 looks stylish and materials are premium. Tech-wise, this pickup comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen. The base model will probably get a 7.0-inch touchscreen. UConnect system is up to date and the center console will get a 12-inch display. Steering-column-mounted gear shifter looks brand-new and unique. Some parts of the interior are still not visible. We expect more details in the coming weeks.
2020 Ram 5500 Powertrain
Unfortunately, there will be no changes under the hood of the 2020 Ram 5500. That means there will be the same three engine choices. A 5.7-liter Hemi V8, the 6.4-liter Hemi V8, and a 6.7-liter Cummins. On the spy photos, it appears the prototype vehicle was using a Cummins engine option. Two Hemi V8 units will deploy a 6-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, Cummins diesel comes with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox. Base 6.4-liter V8 is producing 370 HP and 430 lb-ft of torque.
Optional 6.7-liter Cummins diesel is generating 325 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of twist. According to the latest reports, the turbodiesel variant could receive an additional boost.
Ram plans to improve towing capacity furthermore in order to compete with Ford and Chevrolet. At this moment, the diesel engine tows 31,000 pounds.
Price and Release Date
When it comes to pricing details, the new model will cost slightly more than its predecessor. The price will start at around $43,000. The 2020 Ram 5500 will look to rival Ford’s F-550 model. Besides the latest changes, this pickup will arrive in numerous trim levels. New 5500 truck will hit the dealerships in the last quarter of 2019.
